At Dominate, we research keywords manually, investing countless hours and relying on outside-the-box thinking. Over and over again, we ask ourselves, “Who is the potential customer for this business? What could they be searching for?”

Once we get inside the head of a client’s target audience, it becomes easier to build lists of keywords relevant to the business. More importantly, this approach greatly increases the chance of the targeted keywords bringing in the right kind of visitors to the website, increasing not just the traffic but also the conversion rates — which results in a better ROI.

Once we’ve researched all the keywords, we categorize them based on the potential value they hold. Analyzing each keyword’s signifiers, we determine what kind of interest a user is showing. In accordance to this, we categorize keywords as follows.

First-tier keywords indicate a clear interest in what the client is offering, typically with an implied intent of making a purchase. Searching for “where to buy [product] online” is a classic example.

Second-tier keywords show that the user is looking primarily for information on the product/service that the client is offering. Top lists and review websites often target these keywords.

Third-tier keywords are in no way associated with the client’s product/service, but do fall within the broader scope of the market in which the client is operating. Assuming the client intends to develop a reputation within this larger market, these keywords may also be relevant.

Phase Three - Selection

After identifying and categorizing all the necessary keywords, we prioritize them in accordance to the specific requirements of the campaign.

Our Content Structure Report designates keywords as either short-term or long-term, correlating to their ranking difficulty. We can focus on either of these groups, optimizing results within a client’s preferred time-frame. Our default recommendation, however, is working on both short-term and long-term keywords simultaneously. Either way, we always prioritize higher-value keywords in terms of their projected conversion rates.

Phase Four - Implementation

With the keywords selected, we can start creating the content that targets them. Our team begins the process of optimizing the client’s website with SEO effectiveness in mind. Content is also written for third-party websites, guest posts, and other vectors of quality backlink building. The effectiveness of these actions is heavily dependent upon the quality of the research that precedes them, which is why Dominate treats keyword research as a top priority.
